History of the Spanish Grand Prix
The first official Spanish Grand Prix took place in 1951 at the Pedralbes circuit in Barcelona. After that there was a long break until 1968, when the race returned to the Jarama circuit near Madrid. Jarama remained its home base until 1981.
In 1991, the Spanish Grand Prix moved to the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, where it became a permanent fixture on the F1 calendar.
After more than three decades in Barcelona, the Spanish Grand Prix will return to Madrid from 2027, marking a new chapter in this long history. It will also mark the end of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona after 2026, which has played such an important role in modern F1 history.

The track is 4.675 kilometers long and has 14 turns. The circuit is known for its technical challenges and variation in speeds. It combines slow technical sections with faster passages, which is a good test for both the aerodynamics and the mechanical grip of the cars.
The circuit is known for its strategic racing where tyre strategy and pit stop timing were crucial. The DRS zone on the long straight provides overtaking opportunities, but the races are often decided by strategy.
