History of the Austrian Grand Prix

The Austrian Grand Prix made its F1 debut in 1964 as a non-championship race, and became an official part of the F1 calendar in 1970. The first official F1 race was won by Jacky Ickx for Ferrari.

Over the years the race has seen varying successes for different teams. In the 1980s, first Williams and later McLaren dominated, with memorable victories for drivers such as Alan Jones and Alain Prost.

The Grand Prix was absent between 1987 and 1997, returning for a brief period from 1997–2003. This second period included the infamous incident in 2002 when Ferrari team boss Jean Todt ordered Rubens Barrichello to let Michael Schumacher win, causing widespread outrage and resulting in the ban on team orders.

After an 11-year absence, the race returned in 2014. Since then, Mercedes initially dominated with four consecutive victories, but was later challenged by Red Bull. Max Verstappen has developed a special bond with this Grand Prix, with multiple victories for the "home team" Red Bull.

Red Bull Ring

The Austrian Grand Prix has a rich but interrupted history in Formula One. The race made its debut in 1964 at Zeltweg airfield, before moving to the newly built Österreichring circuit in 1970, a fast, flowing track known for its beautiful scenery and challenging characteristics. However, the track was deemed too dangerous after several accidents, leading to the race being removed from the calendar.

After a major renovation and shortening under Hermann Tilke, the circuit returned as the A1 Ring in 1997. The circuit closed in 2004 when an ambitious renovation project failed. Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz subsequently purchased the neglected site, completely rebuilt it and brought Formula 1 back to what is now the Red Bull Ring in 2014. The circuit is under contract to remain on the Formula 1 calendar until at least 2030.

The current circuit is 4.318 kilometres long with just 10 corners, making it one of the shortest circuits on the F1 calendar.

The Red Bull Ring is known for its accessibility for fans, with excellent views from natural hills around the track and a general festival atmosphere. This atmosphere is not only present at the circuit, but also at the campsites around the circuit, such as the RaceCamp of RacingTours. The campsite is within walking distance of the circuit and is the best base for (Dutch) Formula 1 fans.
